One of the most honored traditions at commencement is the alumni address. The alumni address provides a platform for FCT alumni to motivate graduates to be active in their community and the college after graduating. This year’s alumni speaker will be Katrina Roddenberry.
Roddenberry is a 2008 graduate of Flagler College Tallahassee’s Elementary Education Program. She is currently a 5th-grade teacher at Riversink Elementary in Crawfordville, Florida, where she has taught and inspired students for the past 9 years.
Roddenberry is passionate about science and views education as an ongoing process. She was recently selected to be a member of the Space Educator Expedition Crew Program through Space Center Houston. Only thirty-six K-12 teachers from across the country were accepted into this exceptional program. In the program, she collaborated with a regional educator expedition crew to develop teacher leadership skills and STEM- based learning experiences.
She has received numerous praises for her work in education, including the 2013 Riversink Elementary Teacher of the Year.
When asked, what advice would she give to the upcoming class, Roddenberry said “My advice to the graduates would be to go to work every day knowing they can make a positive impact in someone’s life and work hard to do just that. I also encourage graduates to dream big and work hard to reach those dreams. When they run into stumble blocks, as everyone will, do not give up. Be persistent and unrelenting in achieving your goals.”
Flagler College – Tallahassee will hold its spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Florida A&M University at 2 p.m. in the Lee Hall Auditorium.
